Wip 30/10/2014

I have a little bit to show for wip Wednesday. I got my October blocks done for We Bee Learning. Whitney had us making broken herringbone blocks in aqua, orange and brown. I would have never thought about putting these colours together, but they look amazing together!
They are in the mail and will arrive at their new home shortly

I am linking up with wip at freshly pieced and theneddleandthreadnetwork

Its Starting......

Yesterday we awoke to a little snow, but by 10am it was all pretty well gone. Today is it after 11am and the snow we got overnight/this morning is still here. Luckily it is just a wee little bit. However, it means that winter is just around the corner. I really hope we have a mild winter with not a lot of snow. We were hit hard last year and I personally feel like we deserve a little break this winter...LOL

Have a great day

This and That

For the past few days Mother Nature has been reminding us that winter is indeed on the way. She was tricking us for awhile give us days of lovely sunny weather over the past week-end. This tricks us into thinking that winter along with that 4 letter 2 word are further away that we think! This time last year we already had snow and guess what it didn’t go away until May! It was a hard cold winter with way too much snow. I am hoping that this winter Mother Nature goes a little easier on us.

We spent the majority of the Thanksgiving long week-end trimming trees and hauling branches away. Well my mom and Mr. Pickles did. I was in charge of keeping the chair on the ground and bringing water when My workers got A LOT done and the yard is looking great. We had a professional tree trimmer come out and give us a quote on just tiding up 10 trees. It was going to cost 6000 with tax and well there is no way we can afford that so Mr.P did his best to trim what he could. He was able to do most of it himself though so we saved a few thousand bucks. We still have 3 trees that we cannot do on our own so the professionals are going to come out in a few weeks.
He wasn't trying to get all the branches in the kennel...but it just ended up happening that way...LOL

Instead of supervising I should have been in the house canning tomatoes, but it was just too nice outside and well I was too afraid someone would get hurt if I wasn’t watching. I did however make a batch of salsa yesterday. I got 11 jars, but only use up 52 tomatoes. I had done up some whole tomatoes last week (no pic) and got 7 1L jars and used 120 tomatoes. I figure I still have a good 100lbs+ to use up. They are getting rotten, but there are still more good than bad.

In other news...I got a new cell phone a few months ago..a Samsung to replace my old blackberry and I am having the hardest time getting my pics off of it. I can connect it to the laptop but then the pics don’t show up just a generic pic so I have to guess what I am adding to my pictures files. I added google+ since that is what the “internet” said to do to make it easier. However I don’t like the idea of all the pics I take being backed up online for anyone to see.(I know it says only I can see them but I have my doubts) also not all the pics on my phone show up when I click the phone option. So then I end up having to do everything the hard way...gesh. You would think that the newer the technology the easier it would be. On my old bb all I had to do was sync my phone to the lap top and voila all pic showed up on the laptop in order and ready to share. I am sure I am doing something wrong......maybe...gotta be the phone and not the user....right...LOL

BWNP Report 10/09/2013

So what is a BWNP report? Well it is very similar to the WIP or Work In Progress report that I use to link up to on Wednesdays. However, when it comes to sewing of late it I have been Barely Working and Not A Lot of Progress...LOL

Nonetheless I am linking up with WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced and @The Needle and Thread Network.  Make sure you hop on over there and see what everyone else is working on too.

As many of you know I host 4 online quilting bee’s and take part in one of them called We Bee Learning. As the July-December bee rolled out my Dad ended up in the hospital and things went down from there ending in his passing away on august 1st. Now I chose to still take part in the bee. Was that as mistake....yes...of course I didn’t go in knowing that just 7 days in my Dad would end up in the hospital but once that happened and my life got turned upside down I should have found a replacement. However, I didn’t thinking in some stupid way that taking part in the bee would be good and keep my mind off of the gravity of the situation.

What really happened you ask....? Well let me tell you I became what is known as a bad bee. Yes here I am the host of the bee and I was behind on my blocks and not just a couple of weeks at sometimes I was a month behind. My life fell apart and so did I and well sewing just was not a priority when I really wasn’t sure how I was going to go on living when my best friend, my dad was just never coming back.

My bee mates were beyond understanding and gave me extra time. I am finally caught up now just finishing up September’s blocks. So I thought I would show you that I have been up to a bit of untimely sewing.

August (which now that I look at it I think I did it wrong!! But they are already at their new home)

Octobers block will be a broken herringbone. Something I have done before so it shouldn’t take me too long to whip three up.

So besides the block I mentioned about there is not a lot of progress going on...but I am trying. After I get those 3 blocks done I am going to pick something easy from the list below and get cracking!!

Using up the tomatoes

Yesterday my Mom came out and we tried to put a dent into all those tomatoes! I decided that the quickest way to get though quite a few was to make tomato sauce. I have a food strainer attachment for our meat grinder. So that makes things a lot easier.

We ended up using 85lbs which gave us 14 1L jars

This is now how the room looks. There is a little bit less. We used up 5 boxes. To be honest there were a few stinkers in some of those boxes that we threw out, but most were good.

I also got some of my peppers processed on the 30th. I didn't use gloves right away since I didn't feel as though the peppers were that hot. Big mistake. Nothing like spending your birthday with burning least it was just my hands!!

So that is about all that is going on over here. I was going to make salsa today...but today turned into laundry day instead. Clean undies won out over processing tomatoes...LOL

Have a great day

A few garden pics

I know I have kind of dropped out of the blog world for awhile. Its just been hard to talk about the garden since it kind of fell off my radar in July and after my Dad died in August the weeds were so out of control that I could barely bring myself to look at the garden let alone go in it and take pictures and blog about it. A lot of my produce was wasted. We tried our best. I of course wasn't allowed to do anything in the garden, but Mr.P and my Mom tried to do as much as they could.

The garden has been completely done for the past few weeks. We saved what we could and now Mr.P is trying to clear out as many weed as he can.

I have been trying to process as much as I can without over doing it. Right now all I have left to process are the tomatoes.

Here are a few pics of some of the produce from the garden

artichokes. This was my first year growing them. I grew them from seed and got 10 of them.

Sungold cherry tomatoes. I also started these from seed. There were only suppose to be 2 in the garden and we ended up with 5. I guess I got a little messed up when I potted them up. We ended up with 7lbs of them..not counting all the ones we ate off the

I dehydrated the 7lbs this is the before pic I shall have to take them out of the freezer and get the after shot

I also grew jalapeno peppers from seed. I am still processing them so I don't have my final numbers yet, but there had to be a couple of pounds at least. We had a cool dry summer so the peppers stayed on the small side. I am pickling most of them.

I grew 4 other varieties of tomatoes all from seed. This was my first year growing tomatoes from seed and I must say they did really REALLY well. This is the nursery or it will be. I hope the tomatoes ripen before the baby.....I also have 2 more boxes in the hall and for more in the garage..LOL
I am looking for a smooth salsa recipe to can. I usually make a chunky salsa and I guess I could just blend it. But I would like to make a smooth one like you get in the old el paso taco kits. If anyone knows of one and would like to share please let me know :)
