Belated Merry Christmas

Well this post is exactly what the title indicates....

A Belated Merry Christmas to all

Mr.P got home safe and sound from Pella on the 20th and we simply spent the days leading up to Christmas getting ready for the big day.

On the 24th we went over to my Mother's to celebrate. It was hard not having my Dad there, but we just tried not to think about it and we made it through the day.

We usually get together with all my dad's family on the 25th, but the three of us thought it would just be too hard this year. So we hosted Mr.P's family at our house on the 25th and had my mother over as well. I thought she would feel less out of place if we had the get together at our house vs my mother-in-laws as we normally do.

So long story short......We made it through our first Christmas without my Dad. It was hard, beyond hard, but like I said we just all tried not to think about it and just went on the best we could.

It will be hard, but not as hard to celebrate New years eve tomorrow. We had our traditions for that night as well and part of me keep expecting to hear from him. But as he would say "It is what it is"

If I don't make it back online for the 1st.

Happy New Years to all as well!!
Wishing you all the best in 2014

Christmas Appies

One of my most favourite times of the year is when my mother and I get together to make our Christmas Appetizers and cookies
We have been making cookies for as long as I can remember and started our appetizer tradition well over 10 years ago. As the years passed we perfected our selections adding a few, deleting even more and finally settling on a few must haves. Our must haves are ham tartlets, Parmesan bites, mushroom turnovers, cheese puffs, crab wontons and this year we tried something new....cheesey spinach bites. In addition to this we always make rollo cookies, rum balls and short bread cookies.
This year it was hard to get excited about making them. As much as we enjoy making the appies, my Dad enjoyed his job as taste tester/quality control even more. He would talk about it for days leading up to the big day saying he hoped there were lots of mistakes that he would have to get rid of. He would come home early from work and sing our praises as he picked out all the ones he deemed unpresentable and sit back and enjoy them with a HUGE smile on his face.

Last year we made them mere days before we found out the bad news so at least he was able to enjoy them one last time. This year we contemplated not making them, but we couldn't not make them. It just seemed like we would be dishonoring his memory if we didn't carry on the tradition.

So we made them, well I didn't get to help as much as normal due to my baby pain, but they got done. They all taste amazing, but every bite is bittersweet.

Have a great day

WIP 18/12/13

Oh my where did the last week go! I didn't get anywhere near what I wanted to get done done..what else is new, right...lol!
Mr. P got sent last minute to Pella, Iowa for training so we crammed in as much Christmas shopping/getting nursery ready and other honey-do list things in as we could. Really who gives a guy a week notice that he has to leave the county for a week one week before Christmas with a pregnant wife at home.

I am also still in a lot of pain which makes not having Mr.P at home difficult. I can't lift my legs so getting dressed is a challenge...lol I see my Dr today so hopefully he can offer some insights into the pain I have been having.

Okay I got off topis....LOL I did get one step closer to being finished with the baby quilt. I sewed all the rows together and squared it up. That resulted in a few 4 patches getting a little smaller, but it did help to make the quilt look A LOT less wonky. Last night I sewed on the borders and guess what.....after all my bellyaching I must say it didn't turn out too bad. Yes there are mistakes a plenty, but I can live with them. Thank you for all the support you have given me during this process, its been a challenge and a half!

Okay I should have smoothed it out more before I took the pic, but bending over with this belly isn't worth it..lol It's not quite as puckered in real life

I also started on my table runner. I know I am cutting it close, but I want to try and get it done. I am making a wonky star table runner. There is a great tutorial over at http://cathy-blueberrypatch.blogspot.ca/2013/11/wonky-wony-little-star-table-runner.html
I  have my my star colours picked.

But I cannot decided if I want to go with a golden fabric for the background

Or white?

WIP 11/12/13

Do you ever feel like a failure?
Well I do most of the time in fact and this week has been no exception. It has to do with the fact that I am too hard on myself and worry too much about what other people think. Nonetheless, I am all for self growth and learning from my mistakes so I am not afraid of  posting about a project that is going rather wonky...LOL

I am still working on my baby quilt. I know some of you are thinking "HOW LONG HAS SHE BEEN WORKING AT THIS" Well its been a couple of weeks and I know most people would have had it done in a day. But I am trying my best.

As you will recall from Friday's post things are not going as smoothly as I thought they would. I have all the squares sewed together to make 7 rows and now have the rows sewed in pairs. Unfortunately, not all the rows are the same length...lol I am going to sew everything together today and then just square it up and add on the borders. It wont be perfect, but it will be one step closer to being done...lol
One step closer to being done!!

Stupid Instructions/Instruction reader

Okay I am posting 4 days in a row...oh my oh my oh my...LOL

Wednesday and Thursday I spent a few hours working on my baby quilt. Working with minky for the first time has been interesting. I pinned it A LOT, but of course it still stretches pretty good. It's that kind of material that stretches just by looking at it. Just when I thought I had the hang of it it would start to slip and my 1/4inch seams became 1/8inch seams and I would have to redo it. I don't think I would ever work with it again unless I really really had to.

The quilt it self is part of a kit that I bought locally. It was a great price and I really liked the fabric. If you recall I bought the kit almost 2 years ago. I was going to make the quilt for my cousin who was expecting, however, she has never been all that nice to me and I knew she wouldn't appreciate the quilt at all. So I kept the kit for a rainy day and gave her a store bought gift instead.

After getting all the rows done I am mad at myself and the instructions in the kit.

Okay not the best pic I just threw them on the floor in a big ole pout.

After making the 4 patch blocks it doesn't say anywhere in the instructions to square them up to 6.5 x 6.5. I squared them up a bit as the strips provided were not all a uniform width (although they should have been) For the most part the blocks were 6.5 x 7.5 and since 20 blocks came out the same size I figured that was the way they were suppose to be. Now the minky was required to be cut to 6.5 it didn't say 6.5 squared, but I assumed so since there was just enough fabric for the 17 6.5x6.5 squares. So after everything had been cut, I sewed 7 rows together and I start to lay it out I glance at the picture in the kit and it hits me.

In the picture all the seams match up nicely because all the blocks are obviously the same size. However, mine wont match up because the blocks are 2 different sizes!! Insert a few f-bombs here.

So now I am left with the question. Do I take it all apart and square up the 4 patch blocks or leave it and see if I can live with it. I think the only option I have it just to leave it as I squared up the rows before sewing them together so now my minky will be smaller. Part of me wants to the call the store I bought from and yell, but I bought it so long ago and I am at fault more than them. Arg so not the way I thought this would go. I am just to disappointed that I spent a good hour crying over the darn thing.

Today I am just going to sew all the rows together and just let it be. I am sure the baby wont care.

Have a great day

Bee Buzz 2014

Well it's that time of the year again all the quilting bee's are coming to an end and it is time to start thinking about the 2014 rounds. This time around I am sitting out since I am sure I will fall behind once the baby comes. However, I will still be keeping up with my hosting duties. We Bee Learning and We Bee New have already filled up.

However

I am looking for one new member for We Bee Canadian

and

5 new members for We Bee With it

If you are interested in taking part in either bee e-mail me or  leave a comment on this post.

WIP 04/12/13

I am finally getting back to sewing and it has been nice to have a few WIP reports to actually report about in the past few weeks. My big project to get done before Christmas keeps getting put on the back burner, but as I have been saying a lot lately in "real" life. I'll do it next year...lol

If you recall on my Saturday post I showed you that I had made some progress on my baby quilt. I took the strips sewed them together and made 40 3.5" pairs. I have now joined those 40 pairs to make 20 6.5" four patch blocks. They came together nice and easy and my seams matched up pretty good too....not that the baby will care that much or well at all...LOL

I also cut out my minky squares. I have never worked with minky before, but I see it being a challenge since it is so slippery and stretchy. The next step in the quilt is pretty easy I just take 7 blocks alternating between the four patch and the monky. sew them together and repeat until all the blocks are used. I am hoping to get that done today as long as the minky doesn't get the best of me

A Good Stink

Are you asking yourself if there is such a thing as a  good stink? Well I am here to tell you YES..lol

Yesterday my mother came over to help me can sauerkraut. Well I told her what to do and she made me sit and watch, but it worked out well.

1.5L is missing since it got eaten last night

We ended up getting 15.5 1L jars done up which was pretty darn GREAT. Last year we got 7 jars out of 12. It was my first year making sauerkraut and I didn't pack them quite as tight as I should of. In addition to that a few went moldy. This year we packed the suckers tight as heck and started off with 17 1L jars, two smelled a little iffy to my Mom. However 15.5 out of 17 is a much better result.

I tried some last night with a bit of pasta. It was quite a bit salty and I am not sure if that is because I used too much salt or because I didn't rinse it off before I processed it this year. (I forgot about that until it was all canned and processed..OOOPS) It is a pretty mild kraut otherwise which is good and bad, but still eatable either way!

Have a Great Day
