Use it or Lose it

I am still doing my use it or lose it...journey....for lack of a better term

I have used up

5 jars of tomatoes
10 onions
4 2c bags of green beans
1 jar of salsa
10 potatoes
1 beef roast

Saved 1/2 pkg of fresh spinach by puréeing it into baby food
I have also been making a little extra starch and saving it to add to lil pickles food

I have A LOT of potatoes left and this is the first week I have used potatoes in a good month. So note to self....eat more potatoes...lol

Its not a lot, but something is better than nothing. Basically our little poop dragon has become our compost heap. Pretty well all leftovers and fruits/veg almost too ripe go to her. She now like to feed herself meat so I cut proteins up into small pieces and freeze them. I am still puréeing veggies and adding protein/starch chunks to them. babies really are smart and i am amazed daily by everything she is learning.

Tossed it
2 mandarin oranges. Suckers got white over night
1 cucumber i found in the back of the fridge...yuck...lol

No exciting pictures or recipes today just some puréed green beans...lol

No Arrg doesn't mean that pirates have hijacked my blog it means I am frustrated.

I feel like everything in my life is getting backed up and I don't know how to stop it. Just when I start to see the light I get dragged back down. I'm wearing a life-vest and still drowning..arrgggg

I'm sorry that this blog has turned into a never ending whinefest...arrrrg
I'm just so frustrated...arrrgeady arrg arrg...lol

I have been trying to get my sewing room clean, trying being the operative word. I get side tracked too easily and things end up getting more messy. I honestly start the day on track and by the end of the night it looks like the whole house got ransacked. It's..... well .....frustrating...lol

But i have made some progress. I bought this shoe organizer and I am re-purposing it as a fabric holder. I have moved my Fat quarters out of their cramped home and into here.

I was then able to turn my fq stand into a wip home....see one drawer half full, an empty drawer and another crammed full one below..lol

I also hung up a few of my quilt tops with their backing fabric....yes they are next to my team Canada hockey jersey and hubbies team Switzerland Jersey and an old bridesmade dress....lol

so bit by bit its going somewhere.

Okay first things first to those of you who are visiting my site for the first time let me give you a quick intro.

My name is Hayley AKA Mrs.Pickles I started this blog back in 2011 as a gardening blog. In March 2014 my hubby and I welcomed our first child into the world and for the past almost 9 months she has been my biggest and most rewarding hobby :)

Okay enough about me..on to what you are really here for.....the giveaway!!
I have an amazing paper piecing log cabin/bear paws pattern as well as 2 fat quarters from my favourites pile. ( I think the white is Riley Blake and the Yellow is Red Rooster..but don't hold me to that)

Please use  the rafflecopter dohicky to enter the giveaway.
For one entry let me know your favourite easy sewing/quilting tutorial and followers new and old get a second entry
  • Open internationally

If you are looking for the bee sign ups click HERE

Okay so I have been complaining about not sewing for months now. I have decided to get my butt in gear and at least start cleaning up my sewing room. I honestly have put 8 months worth of “ too lazy to put away stuff” in my sewing room on the floor on the desk and well where ever I have room.

But today the buck stops here and I am going to start cleaning….durring nap time and very quietly since the little ears on the other side of the wall are very alert… VERY...lol The little bugger can hear the computer hummmmmm...what the heck...lol

So here are some before pics…………. Insert my blushing ashamed face here.
I wasn't going to post these....but i am hoping the shame helps me clean...lol

ekkkkkkkkkkkkk. I feel bad....hit rock bottom...so only can go up from here..lol

Use it or Lose it 21/11/2014

Well it’s Use it or Lose it time again

Mr. P isn’t one for leftover (he doesn’t like to use the microwave as he thinks it unhealthy) so unless I eat it in the next couple of days for lunch it gets tossed Saturday morning before garbage pick-up. (We are very lucky to live in a hamlet that actually has garbage pick-up vs hauling our garbage to the dump ourselves or burning it.)

I have been trying to cut down on portion sizes meaning there is now usually only enough for lunch the next day or nothing is leftover at all.  This is easy with meat and veggie, but a little harder with starches. However, if say I have enough rice left over for another meal, I use it as the starch within a couple of days and heat it up in the evil microwave or on the stove top. Opposed to making new when perfectly fine leftover rice is in the fridge (common sense right) So far Mr.P has been okay with this and so far this week there are no left overs sitting in the fridge. Go team…lol

Used it up

2 jars of salsa from the cold room
4 onions from the closet onions..lol
2 packages of steak from the beef we had butchered
Pumpkin and carrots from mother in laws garden Pureed for lil pickle froze into ice cubes and got 1 large Ziploc bag full of each
Pureed left over chicken, cauliflower, pork, and asparagus for lil pickle. Had enough pureed of the last 3 to make 8 ice cubes. (You’d think those three ing together would taste gross, but not too bad)

Lost it
10 kiwi’s this was a tough one we bought them from Costco almost 2 weeks ago and the suckers are still hard as rocks. The taste old too so they will be hitting the garbage
Celery- the bag got frozen in the fridge and went too mushy 5 stalks were lost

So all in all not a lot was used from the pantry, cold room and freezer, but better than last week.

Here is the star recipe of the week that I tweaked from a few other recipes to make my own. In the summer we grill the meat and veggies on the grill. It adds a whole new flavour.
I forgot to take a picture but it was really yummy!!

Steak Fajitas
4 sirloin steaks sliced thinly
2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 red pepper sliced
1 yellow pepper sliced
1 medium onion sliced
1 tbsp. homemade taco seasoning (can use the same amount of store bought)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup of salsa
Sour cream
1cup of shredded cheddar cheese
4 flourTortilla
In a medium sauce pan heat the oil. Add the beef and brown until no pink shows
Add peppers, onion, taco seasoning, salt and pepper. Cook 5-7 mins until veggies are soft and beef has reached your desired doneness. Add salsa and stir until heated.
Put your desired amount of sour cream and cheese on your tortilla, top with beef mixture and enjoy

Welcome visitors from Blogathon Canada

Sew Sisters Blog
As many of you know Blogathon Canada is a weeklong celebration of Canadian Quilters who blog, hosted by the lovely Sew SistersQuilt Shop in Toronto, Ontario. Each day two hosts showcase their blog and provide a list of other bloggers from their province.  So far we have visited British Columbia, The Maritimes and Alberta. Today Saskatchewan and Manitoba get to shine. Check out today's hosts Heather and Lori (they have giveaways too) Also please check out the Sew Sisters page (by clicking their name) to see the full blog line up, participate in the daily giveaway and check out their shop.

Well since you made the trek over here come on in and let me tell you a bit about myself.
This is my 2nd year taking part in the hop. I always get excited to find new blogging buddies in Canada, especially ones in my province. My names is Hayley, but I go by Mrs. Pickles online and I live north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on an Acreage with my Husband of 6 years, our crazy dog Zada and an ever changing number of “farm” cats (right now we have 6). The newest addition to the family is our daughter who just turned 8 months old last week and has mastered the army crawl. Needless to say she is keeping me on my toes and out of the sewing room. Little known facts about me I've been playing the piano for 25 years (since the age of 8) and I have a degree in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology.

I started this blog as a gardening blog on June 1st 2011. I had gotten sick 4 years before, lost almost all my friends and thought it would be a good way to get rid of all the noise chattering away in my head along with showing myself I had something to be proud of. I didn’t think I would get one follower, but the online gardening community took me in as one of their own and I never looked back.

So where does the sewing fit in you ask

In October 2009 I took a learn to sew class with my mother and then a class on log cabin quilts the next month. I was so afraid of making a mistake I didn't do much sewing after that, just walking into my sewing room made me sick. However, it wasn’t until the wannabeaquilter campaign over at sewwequilt.com in 2011 that I actually started quilting quilting and subsequently started blogging about it.

The log cabin quilt from the class mentioned above.

I’ll be honest I have a lot more WIP (works in progress) than finished projects, but I am okay with that. I am proud of myself for having the courage to sew when I can and show the good along with the bad. It’s a lot more rewarding to actually take part rather than sitting on the sidelines wishing to sew or being ashamed waiting for failure. I’m perfectly Imperfect…LOL

Here are a few pics to prove I acutally do quilt...lol
turtle wall hanging made from a kit

My own creation for a fall blog hop

Christmas Mystery quilt a long

One of two quilts I worked on with my mom

Another or my own creations for a flowers blog hop
In 2014 I made a pledge to myself to not buy one scrap of fabric and only work on my WIP list. I am happy to say that I have stuck to that! No new fabric in 11 month 20 days!! I even took a few things off the to do list before my daughter was born, since March though I haven’t sewn a darn thing…lol

My last and 1st finish for 2014... Wonky star table runner

Hmmm what else can I tell you? I currently host four online quilting bee’s on Flickr: We Be Canadian, We Bee New, We Bee Learning and We Bee With it. As well as a Flickr group called Bee’s Helping Bee’s the idea of that group is for people to help each other out with making missing blocks from bee’s. The next January till June sign-ups are coming soon

Okay that is enough about me I am long winded i know...lol go
enjoy the rest of the hope!!! Thanks for stopping by and happy quilting!

Use it or Lose it

I am going start up my Use it or Lose it posts again. I did this a couple of years ago and it seemed to put a little dent in my harvests.

What am I talking about you ask….Well let me tell you. I try to preserve/freeze as much of my garden harvests as I can. However, I have a bad habit of forgetting to actually use everything.
I am also doing this in the hopes to become less wasteful and lose less to the garbage.
Well that is it about it…..
Use it or lose it..lol

I am starting off with an easy one….today I am USING onions

I had a pretty nice onion crop this year. We planted Spanish onion sets and out of the 100 planted I got about 75 onions so a pretty good crop.
Last year my onions all went moldy within a month of bringing them in the house. I think it was too humid downstairs for them. (we have a cistern and i kept them in the same room as it) This year I am keeping them in the porch...so fingers crossed they keep better

I made Lentil Soup from the Hormone Diet Book.

However, I am sure posting the recipe is a no no….

Nontheless, this one is pretty similar

From the about to lose it group

I used up 3 pears and 2 bananas that were all over ripe. They were turned into baby food!

This week no food went to waste and all leftovers were eaten or frozen

Till Next week

Thursday, 13 November 2014

Then come back here on the 20th and I promise I will have something new to show

Work not in progress…lol

Well my plan was to have something to show for WIP Wednesday, but it didn’t happen. I am no further this week than I was 8 months ago…lol

I have a bad case of the procrastinations. There are things I would like to get done, but I put them off. My daughter is constantly go go go so I blame her for my lack of sewing too…bad baby…LOL  I’ll be honest I don’t know where the days go. I feel like I am on my feet doing a hundred things at once and then at the end of the day I have done nothing at all…lol

I do have some good news though…I think I have a gluten intolerance. Okay that isn’t great news, but I think it might be the root of some of my health problems. I read an article online about hormone imbalances (which I have always thought was my problem, but dr’s say everything is normal) the more I read about inflammation the more I kept saying hey that is me. The article was by Dr.Nasata Turner, who was promoting her book the hormone diet. I’m usually not the one to buy diet books because with my ibs the diets always make things worse way way WAY worse and then I over eat. However, this book seemed also included a supplement plan and exercise plan in addition to a meal plan so I figured what the heck.

The 1st two weeks are dairy and gluten free. I am proud to admit that I didn’t cheat even once. Usually like I said the “diets” make my IBS so bad that whatever goes in comes out and then I have to eat again because I’m starving so I over eat, gain more weight and the ibs gets worse and after a few days I am so dehydrated and sick I have to stop. Not the case this time. I had only 1 ibs attack in 14 days, my 3 x a week migraines went to zero in two weeks. My joint pain a lot better and I have only taken pain meds 3 times vs every day. To top that off my 4 year sinus infection is a lot better too! And to top that off I have lost 10lbs.

Now it hasn’t been a cure all I still have spd, insomnia, horrible anxiety and panic attacks every single day…..but it has been nice to not have that along with everything else all at once. I don’t feel so hung-over all day everyday which makes getting up easier.

So back to the gluten intolerance. During the detox you add back in the high allergy foods one at a time. As soon as I had gluten I got a headache and was stuffed up. I was good for the next 3 days when I introduced cheese and dairy back in and then stuffy when I had whole-wheat pasta. I have been tested for celiac disease when I first got sick. Dr’s ruled out everything and said I had IBS which was really a we don’t know why you are sick so let’s say you have this. And guess what gluten can make your hormones go whacky……so you never know.

I’m going to stick with the book and see where it takes me. The goal is to just get better and not lose weight and that takes a lot of the stress out of it.  Every day is a constant struggle it has been hard to admit that. I still feel so ashamed to have a mental illness, but this book is giving me hope and that is something I haven’t had in a long time.

WIP Oct 1st 2014

Wow it is hard to believe that it is October 1st already, where is this year going?
In 12 days lil pickle is going to be 7 months and although it’s hard to remember life without her it is also amazing that this time has gone by so fast. She is doing great and finally sleeping through the night, mommy is still having sleeping problems though go figure…lol

In addition to sleeping through the night lil pickle has also been having a couple of 1-2 hour
naps, most days. I think we have a pretty good napping schedule down now, which means I think I just might have the time to start sewing again….yahoooo!!

My goal for October is to turn one of my Wicked blog hop blocks in to a nice candle mat (I think that it is official term for a square mat you put on the table…lol)

The block is 14X14 so I am going to add a couple of borders and I think that is all it needs. I am thinking maybe purple or something with stripes.

2014  Sewing Mission Statement
In order to try and get some UFO's done this year I am going to try and keep my current to do list small and just work on one thing at a time. I am going to try and not start anything "new" but instead take one thing off of my no progress list each month.

baby food

As I mentioned in yesterday's post. I turned all the produce from my garden into baby food. So lil pickle is set for the next few months until she moves onto more textured purées.

Carrots came from my mother in laws garden since mine did not come up this year

top l-r avocado, sweet potato, milled brown rice, banana, milled brown rice cereal, banana, plum
pear, textured kohlrabi, cauliflower, cauliflower
broccoli, green beans, mystery squash(from mil)
kohlrabi, zucchini(from mil) peas

I still have a few beans, peas, cauliflower, broccoli to pick, but i might leave them for eating fresh. I also still have to pick onions, tomatoes, beets, cucumbers and potatoes. However, this is day 4 of rain so i wont be in the garden till things dry up a bit more

A few harvest pics

I didn't keep up on my harvest totals too much this year. I had planned on doing it, but my large kitchen scale broke and I haven't replaced it yet. Also i ended up turning most of my produce into puree for lil pickle. My mother who was helping me didn't see the point of weighing everything and then processing it....so i don't have a lot of pics or numbers.

I harvested 8 cauliflower this size, but only managed to snap a pic of one before my mother cut it up

green beans. I processed another bag this size too

a few of the little ones

the only bags of spinach i collected!!

So all in all it doesn't look like much but I did have a good harvest this year. Nothing near my 1000lbs mark a few years ago, but i planted a lot less.
