Use it or Lose it 21/11/2014

Well it’s Use it or Lose it time again

Mr. P isn’t one for leftover (he doesn’t like to use the microwave as he thinks it unhealthy) so unless I eat it in the next couple of days for lunch it gets tossed Saturday morning before garbage pick-up. (We are very lucky to live in a hamlet that actually has garbage pick-up vs hauling our garbage to the dump ourselves or burning it.)

I have been trying to cut down on portion sizes meaning there is now usually only enough for lunch the next day or nothing is leftover at all.  This is easy with meat and veggie, but a little harder with starches. However, if say I have enough rice left over for another meal, I use it as the starch within a couple of days and heat it up in the evil microwave or on the stove top. Opposed to making new when perfectly fine leftover rice is in the fridge (common sense right) So far Mr.P has been okay with this and so far this week there are no left overs sitting in the fridge. Go team…lol

Used it up

2 jars of salsa from the cold room
4 onions from the closet
2 packages of steak from the beef we had butchered
Pumpkin and carrots from mother in laws garden Pureed for lil pickle froze into ice cubes and got 1 large Ziploc bag full of each
Pureed left over chicken, cauliflower, pork, and asparagus for lil pickle. Had enough pureed of the last 3 to make 8 ice cubes. (You’d think those three ing together would taste gross, but not too bad)

Lost it
10 kiwi’s this was a tough one we bought them from Costco almost 2 weeks ago and the suckers are still hard as rocks. The taste old too so they will be hitting the garbage
Celery- the bag got frozen in the fridge and went too mushy 5 stalks were lost

So all in all not a lot was used from the pantry, cold room and freezer, but better than last week.

Here is the star recipe of the week that I tweaked from a few other recipes to make my own. In the summer we grill the meat and veggies on the grill. It adds a whole new flavour.
I forgot to take a picture but it was really yummy!!

Steak Fajitas 
4 sirloin steaks sliced thinly
2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 red pepper sliced
1 yellow pepper sliced
1 medium onion sliced
1 tbsp. homemade taco seasoning (can use the same amount of store bought)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup of salsa
Sour cream
1cup of shredded cheddar cheese
4 flourTortilla
In a medium sauce pan heat the oil. Add the beef and brown until no pink shows
Add peppers, onion, taco seasoning, salt and pepper. Cook 5-7 mins until veggies are soft and beef has reached your desired doneness. Add salsa and stir until heated.
Put your desired amount of sour cream and cheese on your tortilla, top with beef mixture and enjoy

Well since you made the trek over here come on in and let me tell you a bit about myself.
This is my 2nd year taking part in the hop. I always get excited to find new blogging buddies in Canada, especially ones in my province. My names is Hayley, but I go by Mrs. Pickles online and I live north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on an Acreage with my Husband of 6 years, our crazy dog Zada and an ever changing number of “farm” cats (right now we have 6). The newest addition to the family is our daughter who just turned 8 months old last week and has mastered the army crawl. Needless to say she is keeping me on my toes and out of the sewing room. Little known facts about me I've been playing the piano for 25 years (since the age of 8) and I have a degree in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. 

I started this blog as a gardening blog on June 1st 2011. I had gotten sick 4 years before, lost almost all my friends and thought it would be a good way to get rid of all the noise chattering away in my head along with showing myself I had something to be proud of. I didn’t think I would get one follower, but the online gardening community took me in as one of their own and I never looked back.

So where does the sewing fit in you ask

In October 2009 I took a learn to sew class with my mother and then a class on log cabin quilts the next month. I was so afraid of making a mistake I didn't do much sewing after that, just walking into my sewing room made me sick. However, it wasn’t until the wannabeaquilter campaign over at in 2011 that I actually started quilting quilting and subsequently started blogging about it.

I’ll be honest I have a lot more WIP (works in progress) than finished projects, but I am okay with that. I am proud of myself for having the courage to sew when I can and show the good along with the bad. It’s a lot more rewarding to actually take part rather than sitting on the sidelines wishing to sew or being ashamed waiting for failure. I’m perfectly Imperfect…LOL

In 2014 I made a pledge to myself to not buy one scrap of fabric and only work on my WIP list. I am happy to say that I have stuck to that! No new fabric in 11 month 20 days!! I even took a few things off the to do list before my daughter was born, since March though I haven’t sewn a darn thing…lol

Hmmm what else can I tell you? I currently host four online quilting bee’s on Flickr: We Be Canadian, We Bee New, We Bee Learning and We Bee With it. As well as a Flickr group called Bee’s Helping Bee’s the idea of that group is for people to help each other out with making missing blocks from bee’s. The next January till June sign-ups are coming soon

Use it or Lose it

I am going start up my Use it or Lose it posts again. I did this a couple of years ago and it seemed to put a little dent in my harvests.

What am I talking about you ask….Well let me tell you. I try to preserve/freeze as much of my garden harvests as I can. However, I have a bad habit of forgetting to actually use everything.
 I am also doing this in the hopes to become less wasteful and lose less to the garbage.

I am starting off with an easy one….today I am USING onions

I had a pretty nice onion crop this year. We planted Spanish onion sets and out of the 100 planted I got about 75 onions so a pretty good crop.
Last year my onions all went moldy within a month of bringing them in the house. I think it was too humid downstairs for them. (we have a cistern and i kept them in the same room as it) This year I am keeping them in the fingers crossed they keep better

I made Lentil Soup from the Hormone Diet Book.

 However, I am sure posting the recipe is a no no….

Nontheless, this one is pretty similar

I used up 3 pears and 2 bananas that were all over ripe. They were turned into baby food!

This week no food went to waste and all leftovers were eaten or frozen

Work not in progress…lol

Well my plan was to have something to show for WIP Wednesday, but it didn’t happen. I am no further this week than I was 8 months ago…lol

I have a bad case of the procrastinations. There are things I would like to get done, but I put them off. My daughter is constantly go go go so I blame her for my lack of sewing too…bad baby…LOL  I’ll be honest I don’t know where the days go. I feel like I am on my feet doing a hundred things at once and then at the end of the day I have done nothing at all…lol

I do have some good news though…I think I have a gluten intolerance. Okay that isn’t great news, but I think it might be the root of some of my health problems. I read an article online about hormone imbalances (which I have always thought was my problem, but dr’s say everything is normal) the more I read about inflammation the more I kept saying hey that is me. The article was by Dr.Nasata Turner, who was promoting her book the hormone diet. I’m usually not the one to buy diet books because with my ibs the diets always make things worse way way WAY worse and then I over eat. However, this book seemed also included a supplement plan and exercise plan in addition to a meal plan so I figured what the heck.

The 1st two weeks are dairy and gluten free. I am proud to admit that I didn’t cheat even once. Usually like I said the “diets” make my IBS so bad that whatever goes in comes out and then I have to eat again because I’m starving so I over eat, gain more weight and the ibs gets worse and after a few days I am so dehydrated and sick I have to stop. Not the case this time. I had only 1 ibs attack in 14 days, my 3 x a week migraines went to zero in two weeks. My joint pain a lot better and I have only taken pain meds 3 times vs every day. To top that off my 4 year sinus infection is a lot better too! And to top that off I have lost 10lbs.

Now it hasn’t been a cure all I still have spd, insomnia, horrible anxiety and panic attacks every single day…..but it has been nice to not have that along with everything else all at once. I don’t feel so hung-over all day everyday which makes getting up easier.

So back to the gluten intolerance. During the detox you add back in the high allergy foods one at a time. As soon as I had gluten I got a headache and was stuffed up. I was good for the next 3 days when I introduced cheese and dairy back in and then stuffy when I had whole-wheat pasta. I have been tested for celiac disease when I first got sick. Dr’s ruled out everything and said I had IBS which was really a we don’t know why you are sick so let’s say you have this. And guess what gluten can make your hormones go whacky……so you never know.

I’m going to stick with the book and see where it takes me. The goal is to just get better and not lose weight and that takes a lot of the stress out of it.  Every day is a constant struggle it has been hard to admit that. I still feel so ashamed to have a mental illness, but this book is giving me hope and that is something I haven’t had in a long time.
